Leupold Delta Point Pro Red Dot
Shooting with a red dot can take a minute to get used to, if you grew up shooting irons. But once you do, there is no comparison. The fact that you can shoot with both eyes open greatly increases your situation awareness, and for target shooters, reduces eye fatigue from keeping one eye shut or squinting. We have found that one of the biggest advantages for target shooters however is that you can (and are supposed to) focus on your target. This means that rather than focusing on the front sight and your target being fuzzy, your target can be in focus, with a small dot pointing exactly where your bullet is going to go. This greatly improves the possibility for precision shooting over iron sights.
But even among red dots, the Leupold Delta Point Pro has some significant advantages over the competition. It has a larger window than many, which makes it much more forgiving, especially on a handgun. The biggest issue we see with red dots is, a customer will draw their pistol or shoulder the rifle, but everything isn't quite lined up, and they don't see any dot at all. They then proceed to vaguely wave the muzzle in circles until they find the dot, then start the process of actually preparing the trigger and breaking a shot. The slightly larger field of view on the Delta Point helps a lot with being able to find the red dot right away, therefore speeding up that first round break.
Every optic that Leupold produces (scopes included) is submerged in a pressurized water tank to simulate 60 meters of water, left there for quite some time, then individually inspected before being shipped. This optic is truly water proof. The battery compartment is in the top and it's magnetic. Unlike some others that require tools, or even removing the entire optic, to change the battery, on this one you just press the catch to the side, the battery lid pops open, stick the battery to the lid, close it, and press the latch. It's super slick.
But you won't have to use the feature very often because these use an LED light source which lets the battery last forever, and the units have motion sensing technology which shuts the light off after being stationary for for 15 minutes. If this is a home defense gun and you don't practice with it often (shame on you), the optic can be left on and battery should be changed because it expired long before the optic drains it.
Leupold also makes a rear sight insert that snaps into this optic, allowing you to co-witness iron sights even if the rear sight had to be machined away to mount it on your pistol (as with a non-MOS Glock).
One last nice feature is that the protective hood on these red dots can easily be removed and Cerakoted to match the rest of your project. Not only does it look cool and adds a very custom touch to your build, this is one of the only steel parts of the red dot, and we have seen them rust in cases of extreme neglect. Cerakote will make sure that doesn't happen.
To say that we are a fan of the Leuopld Delta Point Pro is an understatement. If you're looking for a red dot, check out this one. You won't be disappointed. And if you have any other questions or comments about this optic, don't hesitate to let us know!
